Bearsted Koo Self Defence International
There are subtle difference between the US syllabus and the UK syllabus due to the different lifestyles and the facilities available. The US syllabus provides a more intensive aerobic and anaerobic workout. The UK syllabus provides more training for multiples opponents and for confined spaces such as pubs and nightclubs.
The aerobic workouts are much shorter in the UK to enable more time to be spent on the anaerobic workouts using pads and shields. Note, if the facilities were available, Master J.P Kwoo and I would be able to run more classes in the UK and spend more time on the aerobic workouts.
The anaerobic workouts use pads and shields at all times, enabling the students to develop power and accuracy on real targets rather than just striking air. These targets are moving all the time, as with the attackers, therefore the techniques and drills have been developed accordingly (i.e they do not assume that your attacker will be standing still at a specific distance).
A great deal of research has been put into Koo Self Defence. The resulting philosophy and explanations are detailed on Master Roger Koo's award-winning web site, therefore I will try not to re-iterate.
There are many ways in which you could be attacked, varying on the number of opponents, the surrounding environment, and the weapons available (e.g. knives, bottles, etc.). Although both men and women could potentially encounter any of these variations, men are more likely to be attacked by a group of men and women are more likely to be attacked by a single man, etc.
In some cases you can difuse the situation and walk away. In other cases the situation catches you by surprise putting you into a state of shock and panic.
Only a fool would say that taking up martial arts or self defence automatically protects you from all forms of attack. However, Koo Self Defence does take a realistic approach in preparing you for many of the situations.
Let us consider the basic points when attacked:
1. More often than not, an attack will catch you by surprise putting you into a state of shock and panic. Koo Self Defence trains you to react instictively and without hesitation.
2. An attacker will not stand still allowing you to strike a precise pressure point. Koo Self Defence trains you to deliver a "volley" of kicks, punches, etc., with speed and power so that if you miss with the first strike, you will rapidly back it up with other strikes.
3. An attacker will often be backed up by friends. Sometimes they will attack you all at once and other times they will attack you one by one at split-second intervals. Koo Self Defence trains you to handle multiple opponents and to deliver a "volley" of kicks, punches, etc., in every direction.
4. The attack may happen in a confined space such as a pub or nightclub. Everyone will try and get out of the way, but by the time that happens, the fight is normally over or at least decided. Koo Self Defence trains close quarter combat using elbows, knees, headbutts, etc., for these circumstances.
There are other things to consider. Your attacker may have a weapon, or come at you from behind leaving you unaware as to whether they have a weapon, in which case you can't just deliver a "volley" of kicks, punches, etc. But that's another story!
